Clawson defeated host Lamphere in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16) on Thursday for its fourth conference win of the season.
Charlie Verner led that Trojans with 20 kills, nine digs, five blocks and four aces. Aliyah Vesper had 14 digs, six kills and four aces, and Gabrielle Kalcec had eight blocks and three kills.
Anna Smith had 17 assists and five digs, and Renata Carlesimo had 16 assists and eight digs. Ava LaMotte had 17 digs and two aces, and Natty Lertkasem had seven digs.
Hayley Kauffman had five blocks and four kills, and Jillian Liford had three kills and three blocks.
Clawson's front row put up a season-best 23 blocks, and reached its second-highest kill total with 38. However, it all starts with a pass, and the Trojan defense put up a season-best 60 digs.
The Trojans came out to a hot start, stringing together six points in a row in the early stages of the first set. Lamphere was determined to keep it close, but Clawson never let the Rams take more than a two point lead. After the set was tied at 19-19, LaMotte served a big ace, and Verner added a kill to put the Trojans up 22-19. Verner would later have the set-winning block, giving Clawson the 1-0 lead.
Clawson would then take another early lead in the second set at 6-1, but Lamphere battled back to a 6-6 tie. The two teams kept within two points of each other until Lamphere built up a 17-13 lead, and would not give it up for the remainder of the set to even the match at 1-1.
The Trojans found themselves down for much of the third set, until Kauffman had a tip kill to tie it at 19-19, and Verner followed that point with an ace to give Clawson the lead. Those two points proved to be pivotal, along with two kills from Vesper that kept Clawson ahead, until Liford hit a cross-court kill to help the Trojans to a 2-1 lead.
Clawson carried that momentum into the fourth set and never relinquished control. The Trojans would lead by as many as 10 points before Lamphere inched closer at 19-15. But after that, Clawson would give up only one more point, and Verner hit an attack down the line for the match-winning kill.
Clawson improves to 4-0 in the MAC Silver, and 11-4 overall.
