Clawson's Junior Varsity A team won their match last night in a nail-biting tiebreaker victory over Fitzgerald High's varsity team. The match was very back and forth, played between two evenly matched teams. Fitzgerald took the first set, leaving Clawson down 0 sets to 1. The Trojans showed amazing grit and tenacity and refused to accept defeat. They came out in the second set ready to play big at the net, dive for balls on defense, and leave everything out on the court. Their hard work paid off with a second set win, tying up the match at 1 set each. The girls fell yet again in the third set, struggling to fight off Fitzgerald's wicked service runs. After some serve receive adjustments, the girls managed to catch back up, but ultimately lost the set by a measly two points. However, yet again, Trojan athletes never give up! The team decided that they absolutely refused to lose their last match of the season, and gave it their all once again. An extremely hard fought set led us to a 25-25 tie. Junior setter Katie Kage tipped the ball to earn the side out, leaving Clawson with a set point opportunity. Freshman Lana Wilder, in her debut varsity match, found herself at the service line with a massive set point. After a quick time out and some encouraging words from her teammates, coach, and fans, Lana ended the set with a stellar service ace, winning the set and tying up the match 2 sets to 2. The Trojans entered the 5th set with unmatched energy, enthusiasm, and drive. The girls knew this was their last set of the season, and it would be for all the marbles. Freshman Meghan Shea went on a service run to bring the girls to a quick 5-1 lead early in the fifth set. Fitzgerald rallied back and tied up the game, 7-7. The whole match would come down to the next 8 points. Clawson ran away with the match, leaving everything out on the floor, and ending the tiebreaker with a 15-10 victory, winning 3 sets to 2. The celebration between the team, fans, and coaches will be something to remember for a lifetime! Great victory, Clawson!
